Most printers are sold at a vastly subsidised price, with the manufacturer expecting to make the money back from the cartridges. Some websites claim that HP ink is more expensive than Human Growth Hormone. Obviously, print quality and print speed are relevant.

  • get one that prints color and black and white. get one that you can fax from a scan. get one with a scanner. get one with slots to upload data from memory chips. get one with the four different color inks. its cheaper. see if the ink for a desired printer has ink on ebay for cheap. ink is a big expense. printing is fun when the ink is cheap.
  • All of the things mentioned above, with the addition of what kind of cartridges the printer takes. Assuming it's an inkjet, there are two varieties that I know of. One has a colour cartridge, and a black cartridge. The other has a Black, Cyan, Light Cyan, Magenta, Light Magenta, and Yellow cartridge. Other than that, I'd start with whether I wanted a laser printer, or an inkjet.
  • Cost of ink cartridges, I found a shop that does replacement cartridges for a lot less than the manufacturer is selling them for. The features is the next thing and of course reliability.
