If you want tropical fish, get guppies, zebras, neon tetras.

Hello; Any small fish species will do. Just add 1-inch of fish per gallon after the tank has cycled. A dozen Zebra, or Neons make a nice show. OFM

What if you want fresh water fish but no goldfish/betta?

In my first tank I had danios, I later moved on to tetras and guppies. Those are all pretty hardy fish, good for beginners. Try to get a 'cleaning' fish in there as well. Plecos can get pretty big, so I would recommend cory doras. They come in a few different colors, and many different patterns.

I have 2 Mollys, 2 Goldfish and a slider turtle in mine. they seem fine too me in there.
