Enter the confessional box & knees down. Say: Bless me Father for I have sinned, it has been (how long?) since my last confession. In this time I have: (Tell the priest your sins) The priest will say a few words (I absolve you from your sins ect. & may offer council in some cases) You will be asked the say an Act of Contriction which goes: Oh my God I thank you for loving me, I am sorry for all my sins, for not loving others & not loving you, help me to live like jesus & not sin again. Amen The priest will give you a penence to say when ou come out (i.e. 3 Hail Marys or One decade of the Rosary) Out of good manners say thank you to the priest(& if it is a seasonal time i.e. Christmas or Easter wish him Merry Christmas or Happy Easter). Leave the confessional box & go to another part of the church to say your penence. And thats it!!

The "exact wording" does not matter one bit. The first time I started going to confession I walked in and said: "It's been a really really long time since I've been here and I don't know what to do." and he talked me through it. Now, I wouldn't say I say the normal thing, depending on how well I know the priest and how much time I have I say something along the lines of "Hi father, (we do the sign of the cross) its been x amount of time since I've been to confession. I tell him my sins. He tells me what I need to do and how I can improve. When he asks me for my act of contrition I say something along the lines of: God, I love you so much. I am so sorry I have fallen away from you and disobeyed you. I am sorry for all of my sins and with your help I will never do them again."

Reconciliation is a sacrament meant to be a healing encounter between God and the penitent, and there is no need to worry about exactly what to say or do. This is one way how to go to Confession • Get yourself ready by making your examination of conscience. You enter the confessional. You can choose to talk to the priest face to face or anonymously behind a screen. • After the priest greets you with the Sign of the Cross make the Sign of the Cross and say: “Bless me Father for I have sinned. It has been (say how long) since my last confession. These are my sins…” • Tell your sins simply and honestly to the priest. Don’t be embarrassed. • When you are done listing your sins please say: “…I am sorry for these sins and all the sins I can’t remember.” • Listen to the advice the priest gives you and accept the penance from him. Then make an Act of Contrition for your sins: My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong And failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Amen. • The priest will then conclude with the words: “Your sins are truly forgiven, Go in Peace”. You respond: “Thanks be to God.” • Perform your penance as soon as possible. I've never been to confession. Please don't take this in an offensive manner but - Why am I going to tell a man something that shames me deeply when he's probably doing something far worse and has no intention of telling anyone. Alter boys, run!
