  • Some suggest the name actually came about because the wife of Harvey Henderson Wilcox, a real-estate developer in the late 1880s, was travelling on a train when she met a woman whose home was called "Hollywood." When Mrs. Wilcox returned home she gave that name to her ranch.
  • I have heard that it originated from a couple that owned some land out there. He was offering free tracts of land to anyone that would build a church, presumably Christian. The story goes he got the name Hollywood from a similar named farm back east that was owned by his wife's family or one of her friends.... how sweet.
  • In 1886, H. H. Wilcox bought an area of Rancho La Brea that his wife then christened "Hollywood." see http://www.historicla.com/hollywood/history.html for the whole story The sign, however, was put up in the 1920's by a real estate company as an advertisement for their new homes in a subdivision called "Hollywoodland". The sign originally had all 13 letters, but after the H fell down in 1948 , the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce agreed to pay to put the H back up and fix the rest, but remove the LAND at the end. see http://www.npr.org/programs/morning/features/patc/hollywoodsign/ for more details.
  • I did a quick Google search and came up with some interesting info. http://www.funtrivia.com/askft/Question14564.html The shortest answer was from "Senior Moments": Found a website that ties the two answers together:-www.joesabah.com/dseibert/003.htm Hollywood got its name in 1887 thanks to Daeida Wilcox, whose husband Harvey, of Kansas, owned the land. Hollywood was the name of the summer home of a woman Mrs. Wilcox had sat beside on a train, and she liked the sound of it. (Jeff Rovin, The Unbelievable Truth! , p. 114)
  • G'day Megan101, Thank you for your question. There are a number of eymyologies of the origin of the name. One version is that it was named by H.J. Whitley who opened the Hollywood Hotel in 1902 who came up with the name whilst on a honeymoon with his wife. Another version claims that Mrs Wilcox, the wife of the man who owned the land in the late 19th century named it after the country estate of a friend. A third is that is named after the California holly growing on the hillside. Those are the most likely versions of it. I have attached sources for your reference. • During the 1880s, the Ranchos were sub-divided. In 1886, H. H. Wilcox bought an area of Rancho La Brea that his wife then christened "Hollywood." Within a few years, Wilcox had devised a grid plan for his new community, paved Prospect Avenue (now Hollywood Boulevard) for his main street and was selling large residential lots to wealthy Midwesterners looking to build homes so they could "winter in California." http://www.historicla.com/hollywood/history.html
