You could either open it by unscrewing the screws but that could be worse because the button might fall within the gamecube. Best choice to do is try to see if you call pull the button out with tweezers or push the button to the middle so it pops out. You could also take it to an electronic repairman and have him/her take a look at it.

You gotta open it and clean it from inside, don't worry, the button won't fall off. For the screws use the "bic pen method" if you don't want to buy the special screwdriver.
