Consider a group of four or five teams that are playing a series of a game in a tournament. Each team needs to play each of the others twice to decide their standing over all. in the first round, team A plays team B, C plays D, and E sits out to play in the second round. The team passes "by" one level in the standings without actually playing a game.

___29____ l________ ___30____l ___31_____ l__31____ ___BYE___l Consider the above one small part of a 32 team tournament bracket. This tournament only has 31 entrants. In order to finish the tournament in the least number of games, one team is given a free pass to the second round without playing a first round game (called a "bye"). In this example, team 31 receives a first round "bye" and will play the winner of the 29 v. 30 matchup. Byes are used to fill in the gaps in tournaments that don't contain exactly 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, etc. entrants.

Simply put, a BYE is a free pass to the next round without having to play a game. BYES are usually awarded to the highest seeded teams when not enough teams/players participate to complete the draw.

A BYE IS WHEN YOUR TEEM IS GIVEN A FREE PASS TO ADVANCE TO THE NEXT ROUND IN THE TOURNMENT.

A BYE is also a week where a Team has no particular game scheduled. It is more or less a Rest Week for that team while the other teams in that League have games they are playing. This is true in the NFL and also NCAA Football as well. Hope this helps.

It is when a team gets a free pass into the next round of a tournament. The team does not have to play a game to progress. In Cricket a bye is when the ball goes past the Batsmen and is not counted for some reason.
