  • You must watch too much TV. Watch out for the Insane Clown Posse.
  • I have heard of coulrophobia, (fear of clowns). 🤡 😨 The fear of clowns dates back to John Wayne Gacy, the killer clown of the 1970's. He murdered a little over 30 young men and boys. When Stephen King's It (1990) miniseries was released, more people viewed clowns as creepy people. I know clowns are supposed to be funny. Any person with a rational mind who sees a clown walking by at night will be like, WTF? In a sense, it gives birth to fear.
  • People - at least some people - have phobias. If you've ever met someone who has a phobia - like a girl I knew who had a phobia for (against?) spiders - you realize that their fear really is **unreasoning**. They can't help it. They can't explain it. They can't (by a simple act of will) overcome it. They're terrified, no matter what the circumstances. (I had a plastic halloween spider - obviously fake - and even so she was simply terrified. And not appreciative...) *** The unreasoning fear (phobia) of clowns, I think, dates back well before any (of the many crappy) Stephen King movies. But regardless: if it's a phobia, it's an unreasoning fear. I'm not sure what it takes to overcome a phobia, but I know it takes more than a silly plastic spider and a smile...
  • Often times, criminals dress as clowns to serve the dual purpose of intimidating their victims and obfuscating their identity.
  • You are right in that part of the reason is the way they are portrayed in books and movies. If you really want to know the reasons read this: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-weird-reason-were-afraid-of-clowns/#:~:text=Coulrophobia%2C%20or%20the%20fear%20of,a%20lack%20of%20focused%20research. But I suspect you just wanted to call out and make fun of people who are afraid of clowns. At any rate I enjoyed learning about it. However, the fear of clowns far predates the movie images, they just perpetuated the idea. Here is some history of the fear of clowns: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/the-history-and-psychology-of-clowns-being-scary-20394516/
