How do you tell if someone is who they say they are on an Instagram message?
A few times I got messages from people who claim to be a certain celebrity (I will not mention their name). They were message requests. Although those celebrity accounts have the tick mark, it could be anyone at all pretending to be that celebrity.

I've had an online stalker for decades now. They keep making new accounts and asking me to friend them. I view everyone I meet online as a character. I've never done instagram. But this person impersonates military men. I can usually figure out by talking to them a bit if they're lying. On FB you can tell how long this person has been posting unless they delete it. If they don't have a history then its probably this guy making new accounts. So that's one way. Secondly, I wouldn't trust that any celebrity even knows me, much less wants to 'friend' me. And when they are 'friends' with someone I know or ask me on someone else's page I ask that friend who they are. If I don't know them I don't friend them.
