It seems natural (to me) that Ukraine would attempt to strike strategic targets in Russia if at all possible. Targets such as fuel depots and munitions depots. It's...weird how the press has presented this. BBC News headline reads, "Russia accuses Ukraine of attacking oil depot". I would expect something like, "Russia reluctantly admits that Ukraine successfully attacked oil depot". I mean: what kind of accusation is, "We are invading Ukraine, and now they have the gall to attack us!" *** Note, though, that Ukraine is denying they are responsible, and that Russian politicians are saying that the attack makes peace talks more difficult. *** Just shows how much I don't understand about politics...

robted Putin came into power because apartment buildings were being bombed in Russia; he accused the Chechens of these bombings and got himself elected by convincing voters he was the only one who could deal with it. Many Russians who have opposed him believe Putin was the one actually arranging the bombings- to get himself elected. Recall back at the beginning of Trump's presidency there was a stink over something done in Russian-backed Syria that was blamed on Russia, and Trump responded by bombing an insignificant military facility in Syria which caused no significant damage and no casualties- and yes, I'm stating my belief that that was Putin's idea- there's a reason Trump stated Putin was a genius when he attacked Ukraine- a pretty bizarre statement for a former U.S. president. In short, arranging bombings to benefit his cause is part of Putin's method of operation, just like poisoning his opponents is. The reason in the present case is to stir up more sympathy among the Russian public and try to make the Russians look like victims- and to claim this makes negotiations "more difficult".
