Why do some Answerbaggers answer their own questions?

Same reason you did, to rotate it to the top of the questions list. Sometimes the questions list moves kinda fast when several people are asking questions and people don't get to see it before it scrolls down. DWW sometimes re-posts the question in the first answer. I've answered questions I've asked more than once, but it was a math jokes question and I found another joke I wanted to share.

I don't care anything about position on the leaderboard, but I have seen questioners give the first answer to offer a further explanation. I've noticed the questions move down the list quickly sometimes and get lost - if AB would reinstate the email notification option there wouldn't be such a problem (I got in on the tail-end of that - got 2 or 3 notifications then they stopped). If a question that I'm following drops too far, I'll just click on the "questions" link at the top and it expands all of the recent questions.
