  • IF YOU OWN the originals - that is to say: if someone purchased the originals legally and they are now legally in your possession - then it is legal for you to do so. Note that VHS is considerably lower quality than DVD. You might be better off buying new DVDs...or Blu-rays, even better (but much more expensive) because they put out HD quality video.
  • Copyright laws are usually intended for commercial purposes. You can't copy someone else's intellectual property and make a profit from it without permission - there are royalties to consider. For private use, however, the copyright laws aren't enforced since there is no commercial use involved.
