Does anybody follow the instructions which say to Remove batteries for long term storage?

Wish I had more often as the liquid corrosion can really do a number on remotes etc..

I never do. Does anyone know what that junk is that comes out when you don't follow the rules? My mom used to tell me it was acid, but I don't believe that anymore.

Roaring The liquidy stuff is caustic, not acidic. Potassium Hydroxide along with potassium carbonate, the white powdery stuff if you let it sit a long whle.

i do that when they shut off the airconditioner in my building for the winter, i take the batteries out of the remote control
