• The Grand Army of the Republic is another name for the Union army during the Civil War.
  • The 'Grand Army of the Republic' was the largest Union Veterans' organization. It was established in Decatur, Illinois in 1868 an grew to become a powerful lobbying force for veterans and their widows and orphans. The G.A.R. pressured Congress for pensions and soldiers' homes that later became the Veterans Administration. Membership was limited to honorably discharged Union veterans of the Civil War. Its last member, Albert Woolson, of Duluth, Minnesota, died in 1956.
