NT is older than XP, but XP is based upon NT.

XP is just a newer, fancied-up version of the original NT. If I remember correctly, it's NT version 5. Beginning with Windows NT, Microsoft started using the NTFS file system in place of the FAT file system that they'd used in their previous versions of windows. All the OSes post-NT also use the NTFS file system.

Windows 95, and all of its offspring - Windows 98, 98SE, Me, Millenium - were essentially DOS Shells. They were a pretty interface on top of a command line OS. Microsoft realized that this was a very limited OS, long term. They introduced NT, which was a true 32-bit OS, from the start. If I remember right, Windows 2000 was supposed to be the point Windows 95 died, but the resellers (like Dell) refused and demanded another 95 based OS - that's why Me/Millenium exists. Windows XP was the first OS for the home market that was NOT based on DOS....it's based on NT.
