  • The 3 official languages are French, German, Luxembourgish (de jure since 1984)
  • Native Luxembourgers speak Luxembourgish between themselves. Luxembourgish is closely related to German, but different than 'normal' German. They usually speak French to foreigners living in Luxembourg, as most of the foreigners don't speak Luxembourgish. Legislation is in French. Local newspapers are in German (mostly), with news about France or French speaking places usually in French. Education at school is half in French for half of the courses and German for the other half. There is a local TV channel that broadcasts in Luxembourgish in the evenings, and a few radio stations that broadcast in Luxembourgish. The average native Luxembourger is usually capable of communicating very well in French and German, as well as Luxembourgish. Some might even speak other languages, such as English or even Italian or Portugese, since there are strong Italian and Portugese communities in Luxembourg with second and third generation people often very integrated and no different from an average Luxembourger, to the eye of a foreigner. There are quite a few people from neighbouring countries working in Luxembourg during the day, so often the language of commerce (i.e. the language you might speak or be spoken to in a shop, cafe, restaurant etc.) is often French rather than Luxembourgish, even for native Luxembourgers (some of them find that annoying, although most have learned to live with it). In areas near the German border, the language of commerce might be German, since people from Germany come to work in Luxembourg.
