G'day Anonymous, Thank you for your question. The song was a hit in 1987 for a Scottish group called Danny Wilson from the album Meet Danny Wilson. The band was originally called Spencer Tracy but changed their name due to a threat from Spencer Tracy's estate. The name Danny Wilson was from a 1952 film called Meet Danny Wilson which was also the name of the debut containing this hit. I cannot find anything about the meaning of the song but I suspect it was about a relationship with a lady called Mary. BTW, don't type all your words in All Caps as that is the equivalent of shouting. I have attached sources for your reference. After these two officious non-answers, allow me to add my two cents. Since I was a teenager, I have always been fascinated with this song and the Boy George look-alike lead singer. Looking around for the actual lyrics and meaning to the song tonight, I haven't been able to find much. This included a Christian website where posters were pontificating on the meaning as being about regretting the lose of one's virginity... Ehhh okay, whatever. It could also be a song about a father adopting away his daughter. Like any well-written pop song, the lyrics are given to several interpretations. I believe the most likely scenario falls somewhere along these lines however: I think it's about that first real adult love, adultery (or just growing apart) and how badly she (Mary) was hurt by it. "The Clouds Rolled In... The Rains Came Down"-A bad break-up of some sort anyway. He, in turn, didn't realize how good he had it until she left him-"When I was Mary's Prayer." Now, all he can do is wish her the best and walk away, "Blessed is the Man Who Shares Your Wedding Day," etc., etc. A fall from grace he's not coming back from, "I'll Say Ten Hail Marys, and Leave a Light on in Heaven for Me," but one he's come to terms with. She could do better than him and he understands that now (a.k.a. the one that got away). -Very Frank Sinatra character-ish in the narrator/songwriter's bittersweet, contrite delivery. Also, similiar to what Ben Stiller says towards the end of "There's Something About Mary" to Brett Favre. Good Stuff! I think if you're a man, you've been there at one time or another-coming to terms with the realization that you were NOT the better man.

I agree with much which has been written so far. Moreover, as it has been stated in general, often song lyrics usually have more than one meaning and are written so that the listener can personalize it and internalize it to his or her own feelings. I'd like to think that this is a song about a man who is looking back on his past relationship with Mary, bemoaning the fact that she really was the best thing in his life but he blew it - he messed up the relationship somehow. Now Mary has gotten into a better relationship and moved out of his life. Mary's future husband is a millionaire not necessarily with money, but because he has found his golden love and is rich with her. Of course, Mary will go to heaven as she is a wonderful woman in the singer's eyes. I agree that Mary was lost in a storm, and as another writer stated, the storm was a rocky relationship or situation with the singer of the song. Very romantic song!

I read about this song and they said it was about a singer in a band that wrote the song about Mary. Mary was a girl that prayed that the singer would fall in love with her - so he was Mary's Prayer. He never gave her the time of day and with all things - time changed things and now he was not the object of Mary - she had faded away to live her life with some lucky guy. The singer knew that suddenly like a whirlwind Mary was gone - he was not Mary's Prayer any more. He wanted to tell us not to make the mistakes he made - since he lost Mary because he was living it up back then and just could care less about her. But now, looking back wished he did not make that mistake but now Mary would make some man a very good wife, her beauty and just being Mary. He said when you find someone to think of him - and know you did not make the same mistake he did when he was Mary's Prayer. He said blessed is the millionaire who shares her wedding day because he would be a millionaire to have her even if its not real money - she is priceless!
