  • A sharp slap on a well-padded rear can sometimes be the only way to quickly persuade a child NOT to do something....but spanking I was never into...I think there are other ways of disciplining without having to hurt your hand or break weapons on a child.

  • No I do not think spanking is a good form of discipline. Though If a child is about to touch something dangerous or is consistently touching inappropriate items, I think a tap on the back of the hand and a sharp NO may well be in order.
  • only only ONLY if the parent has a perfect sense of self control! and no one is perfect so .... no.
  • No. Violence is always bad to use.
  • No. All a spanking teaches a child is that violence is justified in order to get your way.
  • Hmm, I haven't spank my son yet, but I think if there was a need I probably would. 60-70 years ago when spanking was common practice, teen bad behavior was nothing compared to what it is in these days of "spankings only hurt hoopla". If done in a loving, controlled manner, I don't think it will do a bit of harm to a child.
  • Nope. No. NO. Not AT all. Absolutely not. Never. Really not.
  • In my opinion, yes. Spanking...not beating! I spanked both of my kids when they were younger (I stopped after about age 5) and neither are violent and both of them are kids that I am very proud of. The thing is, disciplining a child effectively doesn't stop at spanking, you (as a parent) also need to talk with them and let them know why the spanking occured and end the conversation with hugs and kisses.
  • There really isn't a yes or no answer to this question. Parenting is an art not a science, meaning kids are different, meaning different methods work on different kids. Some respond to spanking, some respond to timeouts, etc. A good parent finds what works on his/her kid and adjusts his/her philosophy accordingly.
  • I am currently taking a course about the development of the human psychology, and the facts are there. They say that if u spank your child, u will probably mark him/her for life. He/her has more chances in being depressive, not having a good confidence in himself/herself, and being having a violent behaviour towards others. These are the facts.
  • I think that spanking as a specific consequence, administered without anger is one effective tool among many available to parents.
  • It's perfectly fine if you want to raise the next Jeffrey Dahmer or Andrea Yates. If you want to raise normal, non-violent children who won't kill you with a crowbar in your sleep, then no it's not okay. All it is is a milder form of abuse.
  • No, there are better more productive ways to discipline them.
  • November Alpha Hutcheson.
  • Well, I normally suggest spanking as an effective way to take care of behavior problems...but every child is different. Some children will respond better to a firm, nonangry rebuke. Nowadays, spanking is seen as a form of violence, but that's only true when a spanking is not done out of love. Any punishment that is not done out of love for the child is abuse.
  • No. My mom would spank me on my bare bottom and it did nothing but heighten my anger. My dad would also slap my arm if I was acting out, and that also did not help discipline me.
  • I raised mine without spanking and I have good kids. it doesnt help it hurts.
  • I think it teaches them that hitting is OK
  • You shouldnt just spank them, you should beat the hell out of them and tie them to a cinder block and leave them in the garden to "think about it".
  • In most cases I think it just teaches children that it's okay to hit.
  • A proper spanking never hurts a child in a learning to behave. I am talking about 5 or 6 swats only on the butt of the child and not too hard but hard enough for the child to get the attention necessary. Any spanking becomes a beating if injury is done even if not intended. My parents spanked me many times most of which were necessary. I thank my parents for loving me enough to teach me proper behaviour.
