If the ships of Starwars can cross the entire galaxy in a matter of hours, why can't they venture out into the outter expanses of the galaxy to places beyond the Sith homeworld?

no space ship has ever ventured out of the star wars galaxy and made it back. according to a book i read one ship did head out but was never heard of again. i dont know why they cant leave the galaxy i guess its cos its so far between galaxies and so theres no point going to the trouble of exploring other galaxies just yet. shame though cos they might just stumble upon earth on one of their adventures!!
