Dogs are among the world's most popular pets. If they're not properly cared for, however, or are around dogs that don't receive the proper care, they can catch mange, or scabies, a potentially serious skin irritation.
Features
The symptoms of mange are a physical rash, scabbing and flaking of the skin. Dogs with mange are obviously itchy and can sometimes lose weight. Mange outbreaks usually happen on the stomach, chest and ears.
Causes
Mange is caused by mites that dig into a dog's skin and cause pain, itching and flaking. The mites lay their eggs in the dog's skin, which perpetuates the problem.
Types
Mange, or scabies, has two different forms: sarcoptic mange (scabies) and demodectic mange (red mange). This difference is important mainly when it comes to treatment.
Medication
Mange treatments in dogs are similar to lice treatments in humans. Strong chemical dips are prescribed by vets, with aggressive bathing and increased quality of nutrition.
Considerations
Scabies can be transferred to other animals, including both dogs and cats. It can also be transferred to humans.
