When you have your cholesterol tested, your total cholesterol will consist of LDL, HDL, VLDL and triglycerides. HDL is considered the "good cholesterol."
Definition
HDL stands for high-density lipoprotein. HDL transports cholesterol through your bloodstream and to your liver for disposal.
Antioxidant Qualities
HDL acts as an antioxidant in your body because it keeps LDL, the "bad cholesterol," in a form that can't enter plaque as easily as it otherwise could. A high HDL means your body has a higher antioxidant level than someone with a lower HDL. High levels of HDL are beneficial for your heart and blood vessels.
Genetics
The amount of HDL in your body is determined in large part by your genetics. If you have a high HDL, you probably have a family history of high HDL.
Females
According to "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Cholesterol" by Dr. Stephen R. Devries, women generally have higher levels of HDL than men do.
Exercise and Weight
Your HDL can be raised by losing excess weight and increasing your physical activity.
