Both blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan and film-score composer John Williams have won Grammy Awards. Presented annually by The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the Grammy Awards have been around for more than 50 years, and recognize a variety of genres and artists.
History
The first Grammy Awards were presented in 1958. The first live telecast took place in 1971 on the ABC network.
Types
There are many types of Grammy Awards in a variety of categories, from big-name awards like Album of the Year and Best New Artist to Best Song Written for a Motion Picture and Best Polka Album.
Time Frame
According to grammy.com, only recordings released for sale between October 1 of the previous year and August 31 of the current eligibility year are eligible to receive a Grammy Award.
Function
Grammy Awards spotlight outstanding achievements in the recording industry without regard to albums sales or chart position.
Criticism
Some members of the music industry question the motives behind the Grammy Awards. According to Maynard James Keenan of Tool in an interview for NYRock.com, "... the Grammys are nothing more than some gigantic promotional machine for the music industry."
