Male menopause, also known as andropause, can be similar to female menopause and is caused by a drop in testosterone levels. Like female menopause, andropause can cause many uncomfortable symptoms.
Signs
The signs of male menopause are similar to female menopause and can include hot flashes, fatigue and mood swings. The most common symptom of male menopause is low libido, because testosterone levels control sex drive.
Occurence
It is not entirely understood why male menopause occurs in some men and not others, but it can affect up to half of all men by age 50.
Causes
While male menopause occurs spontaneously in some men, often it is triggered by obesity, depression or disease like cancer.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis of male menopause can be difficult because so many of the symptoms can be confused with other conditions, and doctors have been slow to recognize male menopause as a real condition.
Treatment
The treatment for male menopause is typically testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). Similar to estrogen therapy for women, TRT brings testosterone levels up to normal, but this may not alleviate all symptoms.
