<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: A 200mm Overview
A 200mm zoom lens has a variable focal length (as in 70-200mm) with 200mm defining the extent of its telephoto capabilities. Because of the weight of a 200mm zoom lens, a shutter speed of at least 1/200 of a second is necessary to avoid motion blur in photos. A 200mm zoom is an excellent choice for travel and portrait work.
On the Other: A 300mm Overview
A 300mm zoom lens also has a variable focal length, but would be classified as an super-telephoto. Because of the weight of a 300mm zoom lens, a shutter speed of at least 1/300 of a second is necessary to avoid motion blur. A 300mm zoom is the preferred lens for shooting sporting events or wildlife.
Bottom Line
As zoom lenses, both the 200mm and the 300mm offer the flexibility of a range of focal lengths. Whereas both are telephoto lenses, the 300mm can bring a distant object 1/3 closer than is the 200mm. However, the added weight of the 300mm might necessitate using a tripod in more shooting situations. Finally, your decision should also be based on how you intend to use the lens.
