The opening of The Children's Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1855 is believed to be the first event that triggered the beginning of the field of pediatric nursing. During the second half of the 19th century, additional children's hospitals were opened in major metropolitan areas such as New York, Boston and San Francisco.
