Sucralose is an artificial sweetener most commonly known as Splenda. Sucralose has zero calories, and is popular in many weight loss diets. Though the artificial sweetener has been determined by the FDA to be safe for human consumption, it can have some unpleasant side effects if consumed on a regular basis.
Weight Gain
Sucralose is a simple carbohydrate and, as a result, is absorbed into the blood stream like normal white sugar. Elevated blood sugar levels result in increased insulin levels, which makes it difficult to lose weight on a restricted calorie diet, and may result in weight gain.
Cancer
No long-term studies have been conducted on the consumption of sucralose. Because sucralose is made with chlorine, a dangerous carcinogen, it is possible that long-term use could cause cancer.
Upset Stomach
An upset stomach has been reported by some individuals after consuming sucralose, with symptoms that include gas, bloating, diarrhea, nausea, and cramps.
Colds
Some individuals have reported experiencing one or more cold symptoms after consuming sucralose, including coughing, runny nose, wheezing, itchy eyes, chest pain, and heart palpitations.
Rashes
Rashes are one of several side effects reported by individuals who have consumed sucralose, and include welts, blisters, burning sensations, red splotches, acne, and intense itching.
