Causes and treatment of leg pain varies based upon the specific area of the leg involved. Soreness in the calf muscle just below the knee is typically caused by one of a few common conditions.
Muscle Strain
Overstretched and strained muscles are known to cause pain in the calf below the knee. This condition is best treated by applying heat and ice to the affected area.
Muscle Tears
Tears in calf muscles can cause pain in the calf just below the knee. This type of pain can't be successfully resolved at home and requires medical intervention.
Nerve Damage
The area of the calf just below the knee consists of a complex makeup of nerves, muscles and tendons. Nerve damage can cause soreness and should be treated by a medical professional immediately.
Tendon Damage
Damage to the tendon causes inflammation, resulting in a condition known as tendonitis. While soreness associated with tendonitis can be treated at home with exercises, heat and ice, it is recommended to seek medical help before attempting self-treatment.
Varicose Veins
A condition generally affecting women, varicose veins can cause soreness in several areas of the leg, including the calf just below the knee. Soreness and throbbing caused by varicose veins can be treated at home by using ice and heat.
