Itchy skin can make any dog feel miserable. Fortunately, most problems can be treated at home. However, a veterinarian will have to diagnose the cause, and prescribe treatments for some of those itch-causing afflictions.
Antibiotics
If a veterinarian determines that your dog is suffering from bacterial dermatitis, she will probably prescribe an antibiotic like Batryl or Augmentin to knock out infections.
Medicated Shampoo
Either alone or in combination with other treatments, shampoos made with ingredients like Chlorhexidine (for bacterial problems), hydrocortisone (for general skin problems), Pyrethin (for fleas) or other medications recommended by your veterinarian will provide relief for your dog.
Antihistimines and Corticosteroids
If allergies are the problem, your veterinarian may recommend trying an antihistamine such as chlorpheniramine and diphenhydramine. Corticosteroids like hydrocortisone are useful for reducing inflammation that sometimes accompanies the skin condition.
Flea Prevention
If your dog has an allergy to flea bites, they can get red, irritated bumps that itch horribly. A medication called Capstar, or a flea shampoo will temporarily kill fleas, but you must also use monthly prevention, like Advantage or Frontline.
Natural Remedies
There are natural topical medications that can help that itch feel better. These include calendula extract and flowers of sulfur (which are also antiseptics) and tea tree oil (which is an antifungal).
