Breathing fast may be a sign of pain for a dog; however, a dog may also breathe rapidly when excited, scared or nervous. To fully diagnose if a dog is in pain, an exam should be performed. Also, other stimuli in the dog's environment should be observed to help determine if another cause for rapid breathing is involved, such as fear or aggravation.
