Until December 31, 2013, the FDIC is providing insurance for accounts up to $250,000 per depositor per banking institution. On January 1, 2014, only amounts up to $100,000 per depositor per banking institution will be covered, but you can hold a single $100,000 CD at multiple banking institutions (for example, Citibank, Wells Fargo and Bank of America) to remain fully insured.
