You may not think about your spinal cord as the source of the numbness in your arms or legs. Your spinal cord, specifically, your foremen, in conjunction with age or musculoskeletal conditions can cause foraminal stenosis.
Identification
Your foramen or neuroforamen are openings located between each of your vertebrae. The openings travel into your spinal nerve roots and leave your spinal column.
Significance
Although your neuroforamen houses a large number of nerve roots, it can become narrow or clogged. As a result, your nerve roots become squashed.
Symptoms
When your foramen narrows or clogs you can experience symptoms in your arms and legs such as numbness, burning sensation or tingling.
Causes
Arthritis, pinched nerves or age are some of the causes of foraminal stenosis.
Treatment
Treatments for foraminal stenosis vary. For instance, you can use anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin to relieve your pain or corticosteroid shorts. Or you can wear braces, restrict activity or exercise. Physical therapy is also an option.
