<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Hazardous Chemicals
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, "Products containing bleach ... can cause stomach upset, drooling, vomiting or diarrhea, severe burns if swallowed and respiratory tract irritation can occur if inhaled in a high enough concentration." Detergents may produce reactions very similar to bleach, and certain ingredients such as phenols can be particularly toxic to cats. Animals can suffer chemical burns if they come in contact with concentrated solutions.
On the Other: Unfounded Rumors
For a few years now, an urban legend has been circulating that a dog was killed by a popular floor cleaner containing antifreeze. According to ASPCA Poison Control, "Swiffer Wet Jet products do not contain cleaning agents in large enough quantities to be a serious hazard for pets. Our toxicology experts evaluated the product and determined it doesn't contain ethylene glycol from antifreeze, and is appropriate to use in homes with pets."
Bottom Line
Follow label instructions. If directions say the area should be dry before use, do not allow pets to walk on the damp floor. Store containers out of the reach of pets and clean up spills promptly.
