<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Most Lubricants May Inhibit Conception
Many lubricants such as regular K-Y jelly contain glycerin. Reproductive Physiologist Joanna Ellington, Ph.D., says that glycerin is toxic to sperm cells. This reduces the chance of conception by reducing the overall number of sperm that will live to reach the egg for fertilization.
On the Other: K-Y Warming Gel Has Another Harmful Ingredient
In addition to glycerin, K-Y warming gel also contains propylene glycol. According to Dr. Ellington, propylene glycol damages sperm and reduces their mobility. Therefore, it is less likely that the sperm that the glycerin does not kill will be able to reach the egg.
Bottom Line
K-Y warming gel can reduce your chances of conception, even more than many regular lubricants do. You should use no lubricant at all when trying to conceive if possible. If not, Dr. Ellington recommends the use of a sperm-friendly lubricant such as Pre-Seed.
