Skin tags and warts are both harmless growths that appear on the skin. However, there are key differences in their appearance and why they occur.
Significance
Warts are small growths that are brought on by a viral infection. While the human papillomavirus causes the majority of warts, there are more than 100 different strains of wart-causing viruses.
Types
Warts can appear alone or in groups, and look like a cauliflower or small, red bumps. They can grow anywhere on the body.
Features
Skin tags look like little flaps of flesh that protrude from the skin. They can vary in size and can range in color from normal flesh tone to a darker color.
Effects
There is no known cause of skin tags; they are not brought on by a virus like warts. Though skin tags can grow on younger people, they most often appear during middle age. Other contributing factors are diabetes and obesity. Pregnant women also are prone to developing skin tags.
Prevention/Solution
Both warts and skin tags are treated in similar fashion. Your doctor may elect to use surgery to remove them or prescribe medication that reduces both types of growth.
