Hair loss isn't just a man's problem. Thinning hair can be a huge source of distress for women as well, especially since a woman's self-esteem is often linked to her personal appearance. There are five common causes for this phenomenon in women.
Hormones
DHT, or dihydrotestosterone, a derivative of testosterone, is present to varying degrees in all men and women, and is the main culprit in hair loss. When the level of DHT is high, or even when it is normal in highly sensitive women, it triggers the death of hair follicles, leading to the thinning of hair.
Childbirth
Any time there is a major stressor on the body such as childbirth, there is a shift in the hair growth cycle that causes the 90 percent of hair that is in the growth cycle to switch to a loss cycle, according to the American Hair Loss Association.
Age
On average, a healthy woman loses 50 to 100 strands of hair each day, according to the webstie Quickcare.org, but new growth constantly occurs. As women age, this loss continues, but growth may slow down, thus leading to hair thinning.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy affects the metabolic activity of hair, fractures hair shafts and causes hair to fall out.
Hair Abuse
Tight hairstyles such as braiding and extensions pull hair out over time, and if continued can lead to significant thinning.
