A visa for immigrants is a permit for someone to permanently work and reside in the United States.
Sponsors
An immigrant must have a sponsor to enter the U.S. A sponsor can be a member of an immigrant's immediate family currently living i in the U.S., or an employer. Applicants can petition on their behalf and priority workers (people with extraordinary abilities in science, education, and business) usually apply using this process.
Employers
Immigrants who base their legal residency on employment may need to have their employer submit a labor request certificate on their behalf with the Department of Labor's, Employment and Training Administration.
Visa Number
The U.S. State Department issues 226,000 family-sponsored preference visas and a 140,00 employment -based visas each year.
Residency
Once a visa number becomes available you must apply with the State Department in order to adjust your status to become a permanent resident.
DV Lottery
Every year the United States issues a Diversity Visa Lottery Program for 50,000 people all over the world so that they can live and work in the United States.
