The fentanyl patch is a trans-dermal narcotic based pain reliever used by patients who can no longer control the pain associated with their conditions by any other means. The active ingredient in the fentanyl patch is fentanyl.
What is Fentanyl?
Fentanyl is an opioid-based pain reliever. It is in the same class as morphine and codeine.
How Does it Work?
Fentanyl depresses the central nervous system and increases the patient's tolerance for pain by altering the perception of pain.
Who Should Use Fentanyl?
Because fentanyl is a powerful sedative, it is prescribed as a last resort for pain management and only to individuals who have been following a regular narcotic pain relief schedule.
Side Effects
Fentanyl depresses respiration, lowers blood pressure and produces sedation to the extent that coma or death may occur with use. It should only be used under the direct supervision of a physician.
Drug Interactions
Fentanyl may also interact with other drugs, which may cause serious or fatal side effects. Patients taking fentanyl should disclose all medications to the prescribing physician before using.
