Blu-ray is a new type of disc format that allows higher-definition playback and greater storage space. Blu-ray discs can be viewed in special Blu-ray disc players or on Blu-ray-enabled video game consoles.
Developers
Blu-ray was developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association in conjunction with media and computer manufacturers from companies including Apple, Samsung, Mitsubishi and Dell. Blu-ray discs have been produced since 2006.
Storage
Blu-ray discs can fit up to 25 or 50 gigabytes of storage. This represents 23 hours of standard-quality video and nine hours of high-definition video recording on a 50 gigabyte disc.
Technology
Blu-ray relies upon a blue or violet laser to read data rather than the red laser that DVDs and other disc technologies use. The blue laser reads data faster than the red laser, and allows manufacturers to pack more data on a disc.
Advantage
The high definition and greater data capacities of Blu-ray technology make it ideal for gaming. Blu-ray is included with the Playstation 3 gaming console.
Warning
If you don't have a good television for high-definition viewing, you won't notice a significant difference in quality when watching a Blu-ray disc.
