The FBI is a national government agency that combats crime, enforces criminal laws across the U.S. and protects the American people from terrorism. As part of this mission, the FBI performs background checks on individuals.
Criminal Involvement
The National Name Check Program uses an individual's name to determine if he or she has been linked to any FBI investigations.
Criminal Record
The FBI Identification Record or "rap sheet" lists information pertaining to an individual's arrests. This document is also requested to prove the lack of a criminal record when people apply for international adoptions or papers allowing them to live and work abroad.
Fingerprints
All FBI Identification Records include a fingerprint card to determine a person's identity. The fingerprints are either obtained at the time of an arrest or voluntarily when an individual requests a background check for her own reasons.
Date of Birth
On each fingerprint card, the individual's date of birth is provided to identify him to authorities and verify his identity.
Purchase Eligibility
The National Instant Criminal Background Check System is used by firearm retailers to determine if a prospective buyer is eligible to purchase explosives or firearms.
