A phishing filter is a tool that helps a computer user avoid online fraud and scams when you browse the Internet. Microsoft.com calls its version a Smart Screen filter, used with Internet Explorer, and Google.com calls its version Google Safe Browsing, used with Firefox.
Function
When you search online for a website, the filter checks the website against an updated list of reported malicious sites that contain malware, or malicious software. The software then warns you if you encounter a page that 's trying to trick you to disclose personal information.
Avoids Phishing
The filter helps you avoid phishing, sometimes called malware. This is defined by Microsoft.com as "high-tech scams using phony websites with actual brands designed to steal valuable personal information such as user names, passwords, credit card numbers and Social Security numbers."
Installation
Google provides a link to download its filter called Google Safe Browsing. Microsoft gives you the option of turning its filter on while using Internet Explorer. Turn this option on by going to the tools button on the Internet Explorer tool bar and clicking Phishing Filter.
Information Protected
Filters can protect your personal, financial and password information from fraudulent websites.
Benefits and Drawbacks
Benefits include helping you protect your personal information and protecting you from fraud. One drawback is that the filter at times slows down computer performance.
