Simvastatin is a medication used to lower cholesterol. It is in a family of drugs known as statins. Although statins work well to lower cholesterol, there are some side effects that you should be aware of.
Muscle Aches and Pains
Simvastatin may cause rhabdomyolysis, an inflammation of the muscles that could lead to a serious breakdown of muscle cells. This spurs the release of muscle protein into the blood, which may cause kidney failure, and even death.
Signs and Symptoms
Symptoms of rhabdomyolysis include muscle pain, weakness, or muscle tenderness. Dark-colored urine may also be present as a result of muscle breakdown. In the event that you experience any of these symptoms, contact your health care provider immediately.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Rhabdomyolosis is diagnosed by serum blood levels and urinalysis. When detected early, hydration and diuretics may be used to return the body to its normal state by flushing excess muscle protein from the kidneys. In severe cases, dialysis may be used to prevent further damage to the kidneys.
Conclusion
Report any muscle pain, tingling, or weakness to your health care practitioner immediately.
