  • Blog writers, business people, teachers, musicians, actors and artists all have one thing in common: Each benefits from a personal website. Building a website allows you to get the word out about your trade or skill; it allows you to differentiate yourself from the others in your line of work or hobby. Notwithstanding the exposure you'll enjoy, it also allows you the freedom of self-expression--your opinions and attitudes belong solely to you, for consumers to latch onto if they subscribe to your point of view.

    Determine Your Objective

Before you even begin to build a website, you have to determine what it is you're "selling." You might think you're not selling anything at all, but in reality, you are. You're selling a point of view, a bit of wisdom, or a product. In reality, you're selling yourself. Determining what your objective may be is an important first step because it will shape your strategy to get people reading what you have to say. Do you want people to purchase what you're selling? Would you like to cultivate the opinion that you're a wise, interested person who only wants to help? Or would you rather gain a following or a fan base? Give yourself plenty of time and resources to accomplish your objective.

    Register and Design

The next step is registering for your website and designing the content. While free web-hosting is available from a variety of sources (just look it up in a web search), you might prefer to pay for a domain name that reflects your brand. Hosting your website on a popular blog or social networking site might be the easiest way to get your name out, but is it the best? The answer depends entirely on the audience you'd like to reach. Next, you'll have to design your website. Most free hosting tools will equip you with the information you'll need to design your page; otherwise, it might be best (if time and money allow) to contact a professional who can help you fully realize your vision.

    Market

Simply designing and building a website is not the recipe for success--doing so is easy enough for anyone. Ensuring your website reaches its potential audience is another matter altogether. You can market a simple website by providing links to other, similar websites that will push your objective. Adding a donation section to your page with PayPal or DonateNow will allow you the possibility of making money from every visitor. If you can spend the money, consider advertising on websites that you respect and feel will draw your website a larger audience, or introduce ads into your site that will increase revenue with each page view. Remember, the more money in your account, the better you can do with your new website.
