<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Leave the Pump Running
One option to ensure your swimming pool is properly filtered is to leave the water pump on your pool running. With the water pump running, the water in your swimming pool is constantly moving, which prevents the growth of mold, algae, and bacteria. Leaving the pump continually running, however, also increases the cost of maintaining your swimming pool and may waste unnecessary electricity.
On the Other: Run Pump Only as Needed
Circulate the water from your swimming pool twice daily to prevent the buildup of algae and other harmful substances that compromise the longevity of your pool. Most pumps need only run for eight hours a day for proper circulation. Install a timer so the pump turns on at a specific hour and shuts off at the end of the eight-hour cycle. Running your water pump during off-peak hours can reduce your electricity costs each month. If you use your pool frequently, you can reduce the time your pump runs because activity in the water breaks up "dead zones," areas that are not easily recirculated.
Bottom Line
Your swimming pool can in all likelihood be recirculated efficiently in 8 hours so the pumps need not run longer than this daily. If you have an unusually large pool or are concerned with the ability of your pump to circulate water efficiently, run your pumps for additional time. Running the water pump constantly is not generally required.
