1) "Lucian Freud (born 1922) Freud was born in Berlin, the grandson of Sigmund Freud. He settled with his family in England in 1932, and studied with the painter Cedric Morris in 1939. Freud began to exhibit Surrealist figurative works in 1944, and achieved widespread recognition when his large Interior at Paddington was exhibited at the Festival of Britain in 1951. He subsequently painted a series of sharply detailed small heads, including portraits of fellow artists John Minton and Francis Bacon. From the 1960s he has specialised in more broadly painted nude figures in dingy interiors, which have an extraordinary sense of palpability and seem highly charged with emotional tension. Although above all a figure painter, he eschews commissioned portraiture in favour a small group of friends and professional models. Freud is also a highly accomplished graphic artist and etcher. Parallels have sometimes been drawn between German ‘New Realism’ of the 1920s and his sober, subjective and intense style, which stands somewhat outside the British figurative tradition.
