The bomb was detonated in the air for maximum dispersion.

japan was nuked using a bomb dropped from a bomber plane. the bomb didnt actually hit anything as it was detonated in the air

It was not a rocket, it was a bomb. It was detonated in the air several hundred feet up, because the blast spreads further that way. I think the actual aiming point was a bridge in the centre of the city, but it was a hundred or two yards off that point and, of course, never reached ground level.

According to Wikipedia, the "Little Boy" bomb was aimed at a bridge but drifted slightly due to winds. It detonated at an altitude of about 600 meters above a hospital http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombing_of_hiroshima#The_bombing

Properly, they were 'atomized', as the nuclear weapon had not yet been invented. Others have noted the aerial detonation.

i think it was nuked just 300 to 500 mtr above the ground.
-
The USA has not nuked Hiroshima on purpose. That bomb was compelled spontaneously by and in the very special conditions of the WWII!
-
The bomb exploded without hitting anything, but the blast did all the image. It was aimed toward a bridge, but bomb accuracy technology was pretty much non-existant at the time, so it exploded somewhere nearby.
