Cameras are generally categorized by type and function. Many professional photographers use SLR cameras because of the increased amount of control they can have in the picture-taking process. SLR means single lens reflex.
The Facts
SLR, or single lens reflex, is a reference to the function of a particular type of camera. With an SLR camera, a single lens is used for the image in the photographer's viewfinder as well as the digital sensor.
Significance
The SLR capability gives the photographer more control over some manual settings than other cameras, such as focus and exposure.
Function
With SLR cameras, light passes through the lens and into the pentaprism which reflects that light through to the viewfinder. The light is then allowed to pass through the digital sensor once the shutter is released.
Features
A main distinction between an SLR camera and a point-and-shoot camera is the SLR has a detachable lens.
Considerations
SLR cameras are generally more complex to use and more expensive to buy than other cameras.
