While peppermint oil is pleasant to most human sniffers, numerous anecdotes show that it does repel mice. You can douse cotton balls in pure peppermint oil and place them near anywhere you suspect the mice may be entering your house, or places you want to keep the mice away from. Likewise, try sprinkling pure peppermint oil in problem areas or adding peppermint oil to your household cleaning spray.

On the Other: It's Not Perfect

The peppermint oil is only effective at keeping mice away for as long as the scent lingers. This means you must refresh your peppermint odor-emitters frequently--estimates vary from every few weeks to once a month. If you stop refreshing the peppermint oil, the mice will come right back. Also, while peppermint oil does work in many cases, it doesn't repel mice in every case--and nobody knows why.

    Bottom Line

Pure peppermint oil is a useful, natural, nontoxic remedy for keeping mice away, as long as you don't forget to refresh it--and as long as you're not allergic to the stuff yourself.
