  • In the US, 40 hours is usually a work week. If you work more than 40 hours, you usually get paid time and a half. If you work significantly more, you usually get paid even more. However, it varies from job to job and from state to state. Some jobs (usually professional jobs) don't even have a maximum. I have no idea what the rule is with live-in maids.
  • Household workers are entitled to OT according to state law. In California, it's any hours worked over 8 in a day AND 40 in a week. Other states are just strictly >40.
  • In addition to the US based answers - The EU was talking about imposing a maximum 48 hour working week. I am not enitrely sure how that has panned out yet, but I think it has been enforced officially. My contracts (in the UK) have always stated that anything above 48 hours is optional. Saying its optional, and it actually being optional in reality, is quite a different matter when you are in a less protected job.
  • In America it varies by state. In many states the maximum is 144 hours if the person is an employee. If the person is an independent contactor, the max is 168 (the total number of hours in a week).
  • Normally a work week is 40 hours,or 8 hours a day.If one works longer they should be paid time and a half,or one more half their hourly wage.
