From what I understand, the only type of firearms that are legally available in Australia are single shot rifles and shotguns. Reasonable gun control at work over there.

Yes you can buy guns in Australia although as a typical civilian shooter, the types you can buy are restricted. If you are a member of a recognized pistol shooting club you can own a pistol, there is no other reason to have one according to Australian law. As for other firearms, you can own any rifle as long as it is not semi-automatic (a lack of knowledge on behalf of the anti-gun petitioners and the government means you cannot have a semi-auto .22LR but you can have a bolt-action .303 because the belief is that semi-autos are more dangerous no matter what calibre) As for shotguns, you can own any type as long as it is not semi-auto or pump-action (the anti-gun petitioners believed that pump-actions are highly dangerous because as the movies show, pump-action shotguns blow people across the room - fortunately, the reality is less dramatic but it goes to illustrate the 'strange' concepts that they believe, a pump-action rifle is fine by them, but a pump-action shotgun is very bad) And as for gun control, the criminals in Australia can still get what they want, the gun control laws didn't stop the smuggling of semi-auto USAS-12 shotguns into the country a few years ago...
