Why does everybody call burnley people Dingles? Is it because everybody thinks were scrubbers? (2009-09-03)

I did some research because I have never heard that... this, apparantly, is the reason: It is not Burnley *people* so much as Burnley FC fans who are called Dingles. The reason the nickname Dingles was given to Burnley FC fans came originally from Blackburn Rovers fans who called them that based on the characters from Emmerdale. I guess it then caught on and became a nickname for people from Burnley more generally, it also caught on amongst the fans of other teams, and its application spread. It is used as a nickname now for other teams' fans too now.

When I was a boy, there was a game where if you closed your hands as in prayer, opened the fingers Vulcan-style and slotted them at 90 degrees with another boys hands, you could "see a woman's dingle". Ah, the innocent pleasures of youth. I think that is what is called a non sequitur.
