A very tricky question - what counts as a language? Are two dialects of a language distinct enough to be counted separately? At what point does a language "die"? And what new ones have arisen over the past decades? Do extinct ones count? I've always used the ball park figure "between 3,500 and 4,000". But I wouldn't want to be any more precise!
